As a single mom in California, I lay in bed every night worried for my kids. On top of all the challenges to their learning and our mental and physical health in the pandemic, our state is on fire, in a drought, and Fentanyl overdoses statewide are skyrocketing.

We have the luxury of dealing with all this with a roof over our head, food on our table, and water coming out of our faucets. Because of our privilege and living in the county with the highest vaccine rates in the country, we have gotten through the pandemic unscathed.

Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, many more Californians have survived the pandemic compared to Florida and Texas, states similar in size to California, led by governors who oppose mask and vaccine mandates.

But far too many Californians are struggling with homelessness, job loss, business closures, and jobs made hazardous by the pandemic. Many are mourning loved ones lost to COVID. And increasing numbers of the citizens of our state are being driven from their homes by climate catastrophe.
