Barrett’s Sham Confirmation is the Last Straw
In 1776, Americans revolted against taxation without representation. In 2020, Republicans, a minority, are taxing us, the majority, without representation. They are imposing their extremism onto us, stripping away our rights, enriching the wealthiest Americans, and it’s time for us to revolt with civil disobedience.
Republicans are fumbling the coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn, with no end in sight. COVID-19 has killed more than 216,000 Americans, and nearly eight million are sick. More than a million Americans file unemployment claims every week, and at a time when we most need to stay home, 40 million Americans are at risk of eviction. Black and Brown people are hit the hardest, and all Americans are suffering.
Republicans have no plan. They think they don’t need one. By controlling the White House, Senate, and judiciary, they have sealed themselves from accountability to the American people.
If we allow them to retain power, the pandemic, economic downturn, and police brutality will continue to spiral out of control indefitnitely.
Voters of color and progressive whites are the majority. We popularly elected Barack Obama twice. Trump lost the popular vote by 2.87 million votes and is only in power due to the Electoral College, Russian interference, and 80,000 votes in three states. Republicans control the Senate yet represent only 153 million Americans, while Democratic Senators represent 168 million Americans.
Trump appointees now hold one quarter of Federal judgeships. If Republicans succeed in confirming Amy Coney Barrett, age 48, three of nine Supreme Court Justices will be Trump nominees, including Neil Gorsuch, age 53, and Brett Kavanaugh, age 55. Barrett Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are extremists whose views sharply contradict those of the majority of Americans. United with Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and John Roberts, they will form a 6–3 Conservative supermajority serving for the rest of their lives making decisions that affect every aspect of our lives.
All so quickly, the American people have virtually no time to weigh in: Barrett’s would be the shortest process since 1981 and the only confirmation to ever take place while an election is actively ongoing.
Amy Coney Barrett’s sham confirmation to the Supreme Court is the last straw. We must rise up. Get in the streets, get on the phones, get to the polls, and get them out of office. While we’re at it, we need to get their Democratic enablers out of office, too.
Millennials and Gen Z, your views, identities and lifestyles contrast greatly with those of older generations, you will be the most harmed by a 6–3 Republican majority on the Supreme Court, and I hope you will vote all Republicans out and ensure they never hold power again.
What are Barrett’s views?
“I mean, I’ve read things about climate change. I would not say I have firm views on it.”
Barrett refused to say communities of color disproportionately face obstacles and restrictions when voting. Barrett admitted racism is a problem, but could not name any books or articles she has read to learn more about racism or any work she has done to unlearn her own racism, especially egregious as the mom of two Black kids.
Barrett gave no solid answers for her positions on the Affordable Care Act nor Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court will hear a case on the ACA the week after the election.
Most importantly, Barrett said she will not recuse herself from any cases arising out of the Presidential election that is already underway, while Republicans are already contesting the election, filing lawsuits throughout the country. Republicans are suppressing the vote, closing polling sites in communities of color, purging voters of color from the rolls, limiting ballot boxes and installing fake ballot boxes, and Trump himself is intimidating voters, urging his armed white supremacist supporters to patrol polling sites.
Yet Barrett refused to say if voter intimidation is illegal (it is). She refused to say if Trump can unilaterally delay the election (he can’t). She declined to answer if Trump can pardon himself. She expressed no opinion on whether it is Constitutional for a President not to transfer power peacefully (It isn’t).
Barrett is 100% behind Trump and will enable him to remain in power even after he loses the election.
It is OUTRAGEOUS, a violation of our democracy and it’s time to revolt.
If you can, join us in DC, we need more people to protest the confirmation. If you can’t, organize local protests. Call your Senators, 202–224–3121 and demand they delay the Barrett confirmation vote after the election and vote NO. Call your Senators even if they are Democrats, they are counting calls. Use TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and tag your Senators.
Biden has promised to appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court, and Black women are leading the #shewillrise campaign to demand a Black woman Supreme Court Justice we should all support.
Volunteer to be a poll worker, get out the vote, and VOTE.
Make a plan for what you are going to do when Trump refuses to transfer power.
